VFW Post 8787 Victimized by Theft Ahead of Critical 4th of July Community Event

North Austin, TX – July 4, 2025 – Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8787 in North Austin is reeling after a theft earlier this week in which three air conditioning units were stolen. The loss occurred just days before the Post’s annual 4th of July Community BBQ—one of the most important events of the year for the veteran and local community members.

"This comes at a bad time, not only because of our annual 4th of July event,” said Post Commander Brian Rabel, "but because it impacts all the veteran and upcoming community events planned for the rest of the summer. We worked hard last year to get our AC system running and this is a huge setback.”

The thieves also removed copper refrigerant lines causing damage to the Post’s ice machine, which is essential to beverage service in the bar. Without the functioning equipment, indoor spaces—including those rented for community events, fundraisers, and nonprofit meetings—are now unusable during the hot summer months. These rentals represent a major source of income for the nonprofit and are critical to serving the VFW’s mission.

This is the third incident in approximately a month, following the theft of a classic truck belonging to a military member of the Post and a break-in at a storage shed on the premises which caused damage to doors and locks.

Last summer, VFW Post 8787 replaced several of its AC units at significant expense, relying on community donations and loans. The recent theft now jeopardizes the club’s ability to operate during one of its busiest times of the year and comes as the private club prepares to shift operations to permanently open to the public.

"This is more than just a loss of equipment,” Rabel added. "This hurts our mission, our community, and the people who rely on this place for support and connection. We are asking for the community’s help in finding those responsible and are seeking donations to replace the units.”

VFW Post 8787 is a chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, a nonprofit organization committed to advocating for veterans, military families, and patriotic community service through its services including VA benefits assistance, scholarships, and local events. Since 1969, VFW Post 8787 has served as a cornerstone for veterans and the North Austin community for over five decades. It offers support for veterans, their families, and local civic causes. The organization is managed entirely by volunteers, most of whom are veterans or active-duty service members.
