North Austin, TX – August 6, 2025 – In a landmark decision, the membership of VFW Post 8787 has voted to open the once-private veterans club to the public, expanding access to its beloved grounds and programming at 500 VFW Road, Austin, TX 78753. For the first time in its history, the North Austin post will formally welcome community members to enjoy the amenities, events, and a canteen bar that were previously reserved for veterans and their families. Founded in 1969, VFW Post 8787 has long served as a retreat for service members deployed to foreign war zones, offering a space to connect with fellow veterans, relax, and gather for special events such as car shows, chili cook-offs, billiards, and live music. Now, the public will be able to share in that tradition. The post is located on over nine acres in the Georgian Acres neighborhood, tucked along the I-35 frontage road between Tech Ridge Blvd. and Breaker Lane. With shaded outdoor areas, event spaces, and a cozy canteen bar known for its welcoming vibe and low prices, Post 8787 offers a rare kind of space—especially as music and festival venues become increasingly scarce in Austin’s growing urban core. "For the last few years, we’ve asked our existing membership and veterans of more recent warzones what they need,” said Jillian Cardona, Senior Vice Commander of Post 8787. "They told us they want a space that is welcoming to all, family-friendly, and still honors those who have served through events and support programs.” The property has recently played host to activities with partners like a drive-in movie theater and a 100-year-old Italian circus, demonstrating the flexibility and community potential of the space. It is also home to a permanent race track used by the River City Quarter Midgets, a youth motorsports nonprofit that promotes family involvement and safe, fun racing for children. In the months ahead, the community can expect more public events to commemorate opening to the public, canteen happy hours, and expanded opportunities to rent the venue for local celebrations, private events, and civic gatherings. "This post has been part of the neighborhood since 1969—long before Dell and other Tech Ridge neighbors arrived,” Cardona added. "By opening our doors, we’re not only sharing our space—we’re strengthening our ability to serve veterans and give back to the greater Austin community in new ways.” About VFW Post 8787
