In a remarkable display of dedication to honoring military service, members of VFW Capitol City Post 8787 today announced the successful resolution of a mystery concerning WWII veteran Private First Class Steve De Leon. The tireless efforts of two post comrades led to the discovery and delivery of the veteran’s missing headstone to its rightful place at Assumption Cemetery.
The saga began when VFW members were alerted that a veterans headstone had been discarded near a dumpster in Austin. Post Comrades Bob Riojas and Charles Hoffman immediately took up the case, using the name on the headstone to launch an investigation. Their research uncovered that the veteran’s family had ordered the headstone from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1974.
For unknown reasons, the headstone was never delivered to the cemetery and instead remained with PFC De Leon's sister, Maria (Mary), until her home was sold. As a result, the headstone was probably discarded with the home's contents.
"When we heard about the discovery, we knew we had to act," said Post Comrade Bob Riojas. "It was our duty to this veteran and his family to make sure he was properly honored. This was a true team effort, and it feels good to know that PFC De Leon finally has the marker he earned. No veteran should be buried in an unmarked grave."
After locating PFC De Leon's gravesite at Assumption Cemetery, Riojas and Hoffman personally delivered and ensured the placement of the headstone, rectifying an oversight that had lasted over 50 years.
"This is what the VFW is all about—honoring our veterans and ensuring their service is never forgotten," added Post Comrade Charles Hoffman. "It's a privilege to close this chapter for PFC De Leon and his family."
